Cloudborn Fibers Yarn – A Review

When Craftsy contacted me about trying their new in-house yarn, Cloudborn Fibers, I excitedly agreed! I chose to try out their Superwash Merino Worsted Twist and I knew exactly what I wanted to make with it. A Baa-ble hat! The colors I chose are (from left to right) Sky Blue, Natural, Slate Heather, and Scarlet.

When the yarn arrived, the first thing that struck me was how SOFT it was! There was some serious yarn petting going on. I’m thinking a sweater’s quantity of this stuff is in my future.

The colors are also beautifully saturated. I encountered no problems with dye inconsistencies throughout each skein. I did encounter maybe two “slubs” throughout the yarn that I used, but honestly, I haven’t worked with a yarn lately that hasn’t had this. And they were small and inconspicuous, so nothing that required me to break the yarn.

I will admit to being a little nervous about soaking and blocking this hat. Any time I have a saturated color like red right next to a white, I fear that it will bleed! After a 30-minute soak in cool water and Lavender Eucalan, the water had a very slight pink tinge to it but there was absolutely NO color transfer to the white! A+! I added a faux fur pom to the top and declared this Baa-ble hat finished! I am so in love with how it turned out!

My final thoughts on the yarn: I really love it! I love the stitch definition, the colors, the color-fastness and the (seriously) cloud-like softness. It makes me want to try the other yarns from Cloudborn. I haven’t worn the hat enough to really test the yarn’s wearability (spring has already arrived here so this hat is going into storage until the cooler weather arrives again in the fall), but I will keep you posted if I notice a problem.

Notes about the Baa-ble Hat pattern: Many people have commented on the large size of the finished hat when knitted as written. Susan B. Anderson has written up some modifications to make the hat smaller. I was going to use her modifications but then I remembered: I have a HUGE head! So the original sizing worked well for me. But if you have a normal human-sized head, you may want to consider Susan’s modifications. I did take her advice on not trapping the floats along the back in the sheep bodies. She mentioned that trapping the floats did sometimes show the contrasting yarn through the white, so I just kept my floats relaxed and it all worked out great with no puckers! This is definitely a pattern I would make again!
